The Pont Saint Bénézet, known the world over thanks to the beloved children's song, is a major part of the history of Avignon. The bridge was built in the 12th century, and was often damaged by the raging flood waters of the Rhone river. As of the 17th century, it was no longer rebuilt after flood damage. It is part of UNESCO world heritage.
