Avignon, « La sonneuse de joie »
(F.Mistral's « Peal of Joy »)
Religious Heritage

The arrival of the popes and their court during the 14th century left a prestigious cultural heritage to the city. Avignon possesses not only the largest Gothic palace in Europe, but also a Cathedral and numerous cardinal’s residences, rich collections of paintings, a synagogue, convents, about a hundred chapels and churches, whose bell towers proudly dominate the city and whose particular beauty inspired Frederic Mistral.
